Celebrate Chinese New Year in Style

Gōng Xǐ Fā Cái! The Chinese Spring Festival is coming again, and it means a lot to the Chinese community worldwide. This festival marks the beginning of the new year in the Chinese lunar calendar. While most people use the Gregorian calendar and celebrate the new year on January 1st, the Chinese have their own calendar. According to this calendar, Chinese New Year is celebrated anywhere between late January and mid-February.

Chinese New Year marks the transition from winter to spring. Many traditions, such as family dinners and specialty dishes with symbolic meanings, are still widely practiced. In addition, red decorations, lanterns, lion dances, fireworks, and giving red envelopes filled with money are always a joy to experience.

Each year in the Chinese calendar is associated with one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, also known as “shio.” These animals include the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The change of zodiac sign is believed to influence the luck of individuals born in that year. In addition to the zodiac, the Chinese also believe in five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
