Tom and Jerry: Fascinating History, Iconic Episodes, and Hidden Facts You Didn’t Know
Tom and Jerry is a cartoon with a long and interesting history, as well as unique facts worth knowing. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the legendary duo of animators and founders of Hanna-Barbera Productions, created Tom and Jerry in 1940. However, Tom and Jerry is not their only classic production. However, Tom and Jerry is not their only classic production, with their creativity, they also brought The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo to life.
Thanks to their brilliant work, Tom and Jerry won seven Academy Awards in the category of Best Animated Short Film.
Oscar wins
On February 10, 1940, this cartoon debuted as a short film titled Puss Gets the Boot. In this episode, Tom is named Jasper, and Jerry is called Jinx. The short film was a huge success and even received an Oscar nomination, but Hanna and Barbera did not immediately receive approval to create sequels.
Fortunately, they were allowed to further develop these characters. In 1941, Jasper and Jinx were officially renamed Tom and Jerry. Since then, the animated classic has produced more than 160 episodes until 1958.
Fun facts
One unique aspect of Tom and Jerry is that it is a cartoon that rarely uses dialogue. However, we sometimes hear Tom scream, grunt, and laugh. Interestingly, all of those sounds came from William Hanna’s voice.
Controversy
Despite its popularity, Tom and Jerry have not always been free from controversy. Over the years, it has faced various criticisms, including accusations of plagiarism in the 1947 episode The Cat Concerto, concerns about racist depictions in the character Mammy Two Shoes, and issues related to smoking, violence, and aggression. One of the most controversial moments in the series is the dark ending in the episode Blue Cat Blues.
However, despite these criticisms, Tom and Jerry remain one of the most beloved cartoons in the world.
Moral lessons
What I love most about it is that it always conveys a moral lesson. It teaches us that friendship and competition can coexist, that intelligence often triumphs over strength, and, most importantly, that karma and justice always prevail, as we see Tom facing the consequences of his mischief.
