Fun Motif Facts – Polka Dots Are Back!
Polka dots refer to round spots, large or small, arranged in a regular pattern. In fashion, polka dots are usually associated with casual wear. Most polka dot patterns give a playful image to the wearer, but there are exceptions. Very small black, blue, or white polka dots can still be considered a classic style for formal occasions.
Getting Popular
How did polka dots become popular and earn their place in fashion? In 1926, Miss America Norma Smallwood was photographed in a polka dot swimsuit. Then, in 1928, Disney’s Minnie Mouse made her debut wearing a polka dot dress and bow. By the 1940s, Frank Sinatra had already referenced this pattern in his first hit, Polka Dots and Moonbeams. From that point on, the popularity of polka dots continued to rise, not just in clothing but also in home decor. Polka dots have truly become one of the most timeless motifs in fashion history.
Back to Classic
There is no clear explanation for why this pattern is called “polka dots.” However, many believe it is linked to the word polka, which means “Polish woman” in Polish or pulka in Czech. People fell in love with the pattern, wearing it on fun nights out, and even polka dancing became a popular event.
