Halloween, as we know it today, has a very long history behind it. It began with the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated by the Celtic people who lived in parts of present day Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France. The end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter fell on the night of October 31st, which was marked as Samhain. This festival was also a time of reflection and preparation as summer’s bounty gave way to the darkness and cold of winter. That’s why Samhain is a significant precursor to the modern Halloween holiday.

The Festival of the Dead 

The Festival of the Dead plays a pivotal role in this celebration. It not only marks the changing of seasons but also centers around the belief that the boundary between the living and the dead becomes thinnest during this time. It is a moment to pay homage to deceased ancestors.

During Samhain, people lit bonfires as protective symbols to deter evil spirits. The household hearth was similarly ignited for the same purpose. On this special day, the Celts donned costumes crafted from animal hides and masks to bewilder and repel evil spirits. This tradition clearly foreshadows modern Halloween costumes. Druids and Celtic priests frequently conducted divination rituals to predict the future during Samhain.

Despite the incorporation of many customs and beliefs from Celtic Samhain into the modern Halloween festival, they are fundamentally distinct. Samhain was a Celtic pagan festival, a pre Christian religious tradition, whereas Halloween has evolved into a more secular and commercial celebration.
